Why Did You Become a Dentist?

Revere Massachusetts dentist Doctor Melanie Ma

Dr. Ma admits that it’s a bit cliché, but she was drawn to dentistry because she truly had a desire to better the health and quality of life of others in an empathetic and caring manner. This is also why she loves going on mission trips to serve those who need it the most—both pursuits are extremely rewarding and offer an enlightening perspective of the world.

Where Did You Study Dentistry?

Dr. Ma attended Emory University for her undergraduate education, and then she earned her dental degree from the Boston University Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine. While there, she completed a 10-week externship at the Lynn Community Health Center and also went on a dental mission trip to Guatemala.

Dr. Ma then did her General Practice Residency at New York-Presbyterian Hospital/ Weill Cornell Medicine, during which she gained experience treating pediatric, special needs, and oncologic patients.

These days, she continues to push herself to stay current in the dental world, which is why she is a member of the American Dental Association, Massachusetts Dental Society, and the Academy of General Dentistry.

Outside of the Dental Office, What Do You Like to Do?

One of Dr. Ma’s favorite things to do is find great food spots with friends, and she is also developing a fondness for hiking (especially during the fall). She used to play volleyball and hopes to pick it up again soon, and she is also interested in learning how to paint with both watercolors and oil pastels.
